AT MY LESSON the next day, the first since Treviso, I didn’t say anything to Don Antonio about Chiara’s disappearance or the letters. I was too anxious to talk about my triumphant debut.

“So what did you think of my singing, maestro? Was I really all right?”

“You were marvelous.”

I could hardly keep from bouncing up and down with joy. “Does that mean I can make my Venetian debut soon?”

“You need a lot more study before you’ll be ready for that.”

“But why? You just said I was marvelous.”

“A Venetian opera performance is quite a different thing from a little pasticcio in a small town. Venice is the operatic center of the world, and audiences here expect singers to be top notch. Your time for that will come. In the meantime you must concentrate on perfecting your technique. Ci vuol pazienza, Annina.”

I know it takes patience, I grumbled to myself. But my eagerness to sing again onstage threatened to overcome my better judgment.
